At Chesterton Montessori School our Upper Elementary Program (ages 9 to 12) allows the children to further their elementary education in a more abstract manner. All areas of the curriculum, math, language, science, history, and reading, are taught with the Montessori materials while adding a more abstract component.
The children will learn history, zoology, and botany through the use of individual and group projects. Research projects and the mechanics of designing and writing reports are a large part of the curriculum. Field trips are designed to aid the classroom lessons. A three day spring trip is taken that also promotes the classroom curriculum. The students earn the money for the trip through a bake sale, which they manage and staff.
Upper Elementary students are the leaders of the school, and as such are tasked with the responsibility of helping to keep the school beautiful. The students learn about community service and all sixth graders complete a community project before graduation.
